About

The Full Story

He was born on February 1, 1902  in Joplin, Missouri  to Carrie M. Langston and James N. Hughes. When Langston was young his parents separated. His father moved to Mexico. He was mostly raised by his mother, grandmother, and the Reeds ( a childless couple). Although, his mother wasn't around a whole lot because she was always in search of steady employment. He lived in Kansas with his grandmother until he was 12.  He then moved to Illinois with his mother and stepfather. His family then later moved to Ohio. After he graduated high school, he spent one year with his father in Mexico. Due to his humble origins, Langston admired those who were poor but had a strong sense of emotion and pride. He called them "low-down folks".
